Rat Lab Roles Tier List
Lab Rats, Scientists, and Security graded by goal — not by hype thumbnails.
This Roles Tier List grades Rat Lab’s three teams — Lab Rats, Scientists, and Security — across four goals: fun, escape, PvP / lockdown, and science. Letter grades are guidance for public servers as of the active September 2026 patch window, not eternal law. Cross-check Updates after big changes, compare kits on the Tools tier list, and read full primers on the Teams Hub.
Ranking rules
- Grades assume average random teammates, not a five-stack voice call.
- Session tool unlocks reset each join, so grades assume you play the role long enough to reach typical mid-session tools.
- Vest knowledge matters: vest = +50 HP shifts rat survivability and Security trade math.
- Mutation Index colour literacy matters for Scientists — and those colours remain not promo codes (Codes).
Quick board
| Role | Fun | Escape | PvP / Lockdown | Science |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lab Rats | S | S | B | C |
| Scientists | B | C | B | S |
| Security | A | C | S | B |
Escape column for Security/Scientists means “how good the role is at personally completing a rat-style three-stage escape,” not “how good it is at stopping one.”
Lab Rats
Fun: S — Bite peels, vest clutches, and stage-three heartbeats are the fantasy most players clip.
Escape: S — The role is built for the three-stage escape. Rats who learn routes and skip ego revenge clear more often than rats who brawl every scientist.
PvP / Lockdown: B — You can win fights, especially with vest HP and bite timing, but dedicated Security kits (net, baton, taser, guns, sniper) exist to beat you in fair corridors.
Science: C — You are usually the subject, not the Index operator. Sabotage can slow science, yet you are not graded as a mutation specialist.

When Lab Rats drop a tier
- You refuse the vest and die to one baton cycle.
- You treat Mutation Index colours as codes and ignore real debuffs (Mutations).
- You rejoin expecting yesterday’s unlocks to persist.
Scientists
Fun: B — High if you like systems and tagging; lower if you wanted pure chase cam footage.
Escape: C — Not your native win path. A scientist “escaping” is usually flavour or a chaotic side story.
PvP / Lockdown: B — Mutation gun plus hazmat / armour can swing fights, especially with Security help, but raw capture tools still favour guards.
Science: S — Default best role for Mutation Index progress and lab control. Colour literacy is the skill ceiling.
Playbook links: Scientists, Scientist Guide, Mutations.
When Scientists drop a tier
- You block Security chokes and gift rats a free stage two.
- You never unlock hazmat / armour in contested sessions.
- You confuse the Mutation Codes pass or Index colours with free promo redeems.
Security
Fun: A — Extremely fun when nets land and stage-three holds clutch; less fun if you only snipe and miss.
Escape: C — You are the anti-escape role. Personal escape grading stays low by design.
PvP / Lockdown: S — Best capture toolkit in the game when session unlocks cooperate: net setups, baton confirms, tasers, guns, sniper angles, traps.
Science: B — You enable science by keeping subjects (or threats) managed, but you are not the Index lead.
Playbook links: Security, Security Guide.
When Security drops a tier
- Tunnel chase one rat while the pack finishes the escape elsewhere.
- Ignore vest math and overcommit into bite peels.
- Skip trap lines and play only deathmatch in the wrong room.
Goal-based recommendations
“I want the classic Rat Lab fantasy”
Pick Lab Rats (S fun / S escape). Learn routes before revenge. Watch the lab-rats video on the role page, then practice one clean clear.
“I want to win fights and control the map”
Pick Security (S PvP). Drill net → baton / taser. Study tool ranks on Tools.
“I want systems and mutations”
Pick Scientists (S science). Read colour rules before you spray the mutation gun.
“My stack wants mixed chaos”
Duo Security + Scientist for containment experiments, or duo Rats for coordinated stage pushes. Avoid three people all learning sniper angles on the same balcony.

Honesty corner
We will adjust letters when Evil Science changes capture strength, mutation timings, or escape steps. We will not sell you a fake “secret S-tier script role.” If someone ranks exploit ESP as gameplay, leave — see Scripts.
Pick the grade that matches your goal tonight, then put the hours into routes and confirms. That beats arguing about letters in chat while a rat finishes stage three behind you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Rat Lab players.
Why are Lab Rats C for science?
Science grades measure Mutation Index leadership. Rats can disrupt experiments but are not the primary science role.
Why is Security C for escape?
Escape grading means completing the rat three-stage exit. Security is built to stop that path, not main it.
Will Forever passes change these tiers?
Passes may add comfort, but letter grades still hinge on role tools, routing, and session unlocks. Recheck Updates after major patches.
Where should I go after picking a role?
Open that role’s Teams page, the matching guide under Guides, and the Tools tier list for kit priority.
